Beginning January 1, 2014 the “individual mandate” requires that everyone have a minimum level of health insurance of pay a penalty. Your coverage can come from your (or your spouse’s) employment, through a policy you buy on your own, or through a government-sponsored program like Medicare of Medicaid.
